An Utah man in the United States was arrested and accused of manslaughter after allegedly shooting his friend in the chest because the latter claimed he could dodge bullets.
Twenty three-year-old Ashton Jonathan Mann was arrested on one count of second-degree felony manslaughter and one third-degree felony charge related to firearms for a business involving guns and marijuana use. In the early hours of Sunday, February 2nd, first responders were called to a home in Kearns, Utah, where they found an unresponsive young man with a gunshot wound to the chest lying on the floor. The victim was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors there couldn’t save his life. Mann later told police that he had shot his friend after he bragged that he could dodge a bullet.
During questioning, the 23-year-old suspect told police that he and his friend were hanging out in the kitchen and smoking marijuana on the night of the tragic incident. They were mostly talking about guns, and at one point, they moved into the garage to continue the conversation. They were handling two firearms, and Ashton’s friend allegedly started talking about how he could “dodge a bullet.”
After seemingly unloading both guns, the two friends decided to test the victim’s bullet-dodging abilities. Ashton would fire the “empty” gun at his friend, and he would try to jump out of the way as quickly as possible. They reportedly played this game about six times. On the sixth occasion, Mann fired a bullet that hit his friend in the chest.
“Mann said at the final time, the gun fired, striking the deceased victim in the chest,” documents showed.
The 23-year-old told police that he tried giving his friend first aid until the ambulance arrived, but he remained unresponsive. Upon searching the home, investigators found two handguns, ammunition and magazines, as well as “paraphernalia consistent with marijuana use”.
