Man allegedly flogs son to death – Daily Trust


A man, identified as Jato Alhaji Jaye, has allegedly flogged his 11-year-old son, Buhari Jato, to death in the Agbaja area of Oworo land in the Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The incident, our correspondent learnt, occurred on Monday when Buhari Jato was allegedly flogged to death at a grazing field following an altercation with his father.

 The victim had reportedly gone grazing with his father on August 17 and had not been seen since then.

Zuberu Adamu of the Fulani bush camp in Agbaja village was said to have reported the incident to the police that his sister, who is the suspect’s wife, told him she had not seen her son, Buhari Jato, since he went grazing with his father on August 17.

He said a search party was immediately organized, which led to the discovery of the boy’s lifeless body in a shallow grave in the bush. 

According to him, the matter was then reported to the police at Division ‘B’ in Lokoja.

Security operatives were said to have rushed to the scene where photographs were taken, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

 The decomposing body was released to the family upon request for burial according to Islamic rites.

The suspect allegedly confessed to the crime during interrogation, saying the deceased had offended him while they were tending to the animals together on the grazing field that day. 

He allegedly admitted to using herders’ stick to flog the boy as punishment, which led to his death.

The state police command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Aya, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust on Thursday. 

He said, “The suspect has been arrested and is in our custody. He will be arraigned in court on completion of the investigation.”
