Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to bring Super Eagles’ international fixtures to Ibadan, insisting that the move would boost his administration’s efforts to grow the state’s sports economy.
Seyi Makinde appealed on Saturday while declaring open the 2025 Annual General Assembly of the NFF, which was hosted in Ibadan.
The governor described football as a powerful tool for unity in Nigeria and said Oyo State is prepared to host high-profile sporting events. According to him, facilities in the state capital meet the standard required for international fixtures.
“Oyo State, particularly Ibadan, is ready to host top-tier events, including Super Eagles matches. We have the facilities, and I pledge full government support to make it successful,” Makinde said.
He also praised the leadership of the NFF and the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for ongoing reforms in the domestic game, especially efforts to improve officiating and strengthen league organisation.
Meanwhile, Makinde also celebrated Nigeria’s Falconets following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Rwanda in the second leg of their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying clash played in Ibadan.
After the match, the governor announced a $15,000 cash reward for the team and commended the players and coaching staff for their performance.
Goals from Precious Oscar, Tumininu Adeshina, Janet Akekoromowei, and Alaba Olabiyi sealed Nigeria’s win, giving the Falconets a 5-0 aggregate triumph over Rwanda.
With the result, the Falconets advance to the final qualifying round, where they will face Senegal in February 2026. The Senegalese side booked their place after a 2-0 aggregate victory over Algeria.
