The major road connecting Umuenyere Alayi and Item communities in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State has collapsed following severe erosion, exposing residents and travellers to serious danger.
The deep gully, which opened up on the busy road, has created fear among villagers who depend on the route for daily movement and commercial activities.
According to concerned indigenes of Alayi, Item and other road users, the erosion problem began as a small spot but worsened rapidly last week, leading to the collapse of the road.

They appealed to the Abia State government to take immediate action by closing the gully and implementing long-term erosion control measures to prevent future occurrences.
Community members, in a bid to avert accidents, placed green leaves around the collapsed section of the Alayi-Item road to alert approaching vehicles and reduce the risk of cars plunging into the ditch.
According to Daily Post, the chairman of Bende Local Government Area, Hon. Uwabunkeonye Bassey, on Monday visited the site to sympathize with the affected communities and travellers.
Bassey assured the residents that both the Abia State government and the Bende Local Government Authority would move quickly to address the situation.
He further promised that a temporary access road would be created to ease movement, while the collapsed section would be given urgent attention by the authorities.
