Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is close to extending his stay at Old Trafford, with talks underway over a new contract expected to be finalized before the end of 2025.

The 32-year-old centre-back has entered the final eight months of his current deal, but discussions between United’s director of football negotiations, Matt Hargreaves, and Maguire’s representatives are progressing positively, according to SunSport.

Amorim’s influence on Maguire’s revival

Head coach Ruben Amorim played a decisive role in Maguire’s resurgence, triggering the one-year extension in January and including him in the club’s leadership group over the summer.

Amorim also handed the former captain the armband again during the League Cup defeat to Grimsby Town in August, the first time Maguire led the side since losing the captaincy under Erik ten Hag in 2023.

Consistency and fan redemption

Despite being left out of recent England squads, Maguire has enjoyed a renaissance at United following his failed £30 million move to West Ham.

His reliable performances and a dramatic 121st-minute winner against Lyon in last season’s Europa League quarter-finals have earned him renewed respect from supporters.

The defender, whose salary currently sits around £140,000 per week after a 25% reduction due to United’s Champions League absence, could remain on similar terms under the new deal.

A veteran leader at Old Trafford

Since joining from Leicester City for a world-record £80 million fee in 2019, Maguire has made 253 appearances for the club, more than any other current United centre-back.

He recently received a commemorative frame from director of football Jason Wilcox to mark his 250th game milestone.
