M-Kopa hits 1 million customers in Nigeria, the fastest country to that milestone

M-KOPA announced it has now served 1 million customers in Nigeria, the fastest of its five markets to reach that milestone. The development comes after the fintech company reached 1 million users in Uganda.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the company noted that the milestone was achieved with the support of its team, which has grown from 60 employees in 2020 to over 200 full-time staff members in 2025.

In addition, the growth was supported by its team of 7,786 direct sales representatives (DSRs), of whom 66% are under the age of 35. This is another testament to its contribution to solving unemployment in Nigeria.

M-KOPA Nigeria’s amazing growth trajectory shows that we are making a difference to the millions of Everyday Earners who choose M-KOPA every day,” part of the statement reads.

Aside from serving 1 million customers in Nigeria, M-KOPA highlighted that its initiative has also provided cash loans to over 140,000 customers, thereby unlocking their access to digital financial services.

The UK-based Fintech company has continued to support everyday earners, particularly women and rural areas, in managing their expenses, improving financial resilience, and growing their businesses. The mission is to drive the company’s services and products to targeted audiences and serve more customers.

Notably, its network of sales agents is pivotal to this drive. One of these agents, Oluwarantimi Azeez Adewunmi, has brought in 2,381 customers and is recognised as its top-selling DSR. Another, Akano Jude Oluwamayowa, has helped the company onboard 1,632 customers. In recognition of their efforts, both agents gained promotion to sales executive.

Also, Afolabi Olagoke Azeez, tagged as the longest serving and consistent DSR for nearly 5 years, has brought in 756 new customers.

M-KOPA officially launched in Nigeria in July 2021. The launch involved partnering with local firms such as Airtel to offer smartphones and financing to customers through a pay-as-you-go model.

The launch followed a successful pilot program that sold over 20,000 devices in Lagos.

M-KOPA continued rise in bridging financial and digital inclusion gaps

Earlier in the week, M-KOPA hit 1 million customers in Uganda, powered by its 7,484 DSRs in the country.

These achievements represent the company’s goal to penetrate underserved communities with affordable smartphone ownership plans. M-KOPA wants to digitally and financially include Africans across Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa.

Compared to other devices, M-KOPA’s smartphones are not just tools for connectivity; they are financial gateways embedded with the company’s Smart Money Platform, offering affordable credit, health insurance, and device protection.

The company sees smartphones as more than a connectivity device but a lifeline to break free from financial exclusion.
