Liverpool blow as Frimpong ruled out for weeks with hamstring injury

Liverpool have been dealt an early-season setback after manager Arne Slot confirmed that right-back Jeremie Frimpong will be sidelined for several weeks with a hamstring injury.

The £29.5 million summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen limped off after an hour during the Reds’ 4-2 opening-day victory over Bournemouth at Anfield last Friday, cutting short his Premier League debut.

“The medical team were completely right to tell me to take Jeremie off,” Slot explained at his pre-match press conference ahead of Monday’s clash with Newcastle. “It was a good call, otherwise he would have been out for longer. We expect him back after the international break (September 10).”

Frimpong’s absence means he will miss Liverpool’s upcoming league fixtures against Newcastle at St. James’ Park and Arsenal at Anfield.

With Conor Bradley only just returning to training and Joe Gomez still working his way back to full fitness, Slot faces a defensive headache as he looks to balance his squad in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, speculation continues to swirl over Liverpool’s pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, with the Magpies holding out for a British record fee of £150 million for the Sweden international.
