Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has confirmed he is fully fit and ready to return to top form after an injury-disrupted start to the season.
The 37-year-old Polish forward has struggled with a thigh problem that kept him out of Barcelona’s Clasico defeat to Real Madrid in October.
Manager Hansi Flick has also rotated him with Ferran Torres in recent weeks as the veteran striker worked on regaining match fitness.
Having missed the opening weeks of the campaign with a muscle injury, Lewandowski made his first start in mid-September and returned as a substitute in Sunday’s La Liga win over Elche. He is now expected to feature in Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Club Brugge.
“The most important thing is that physically I’m good, this season I had two injuries, so I think my season starts now,” Lewandowski told reporters. “Before I had problems, but I’m always thinking about the team and how to help. When you have a lot of games, it’s important to finish the season strong.”
The striker admitted it has been unusual not to feature regularly after leading Barcelona to a domestic treble last season. “It’s been different after the injuries, but I’ve worked really hard in the last few weeks. I feel I’m back at a very high level,” he added. “If we play as a team, we can win trophies.”
Flick praised Lewandowski’s professionalism and rapid recovery from the thigh injury suffered in mid-October.
“I’ve worked with him for more than four years, and I’ve never had a player more professional than him,” Flick said. “When he got injured, I thought he’d be out for five weeks, but whatever he has in his DNA, he came back much sooner.”
