Leverage research for alternative power sources on campuses, Tinubu charges varsities 

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu weekend urged Nigerian university managements to provide alternative power supply in their campuses by leveraging on researches.

He gave the advice in a message to the 39th convocation ceremony of Bayero University, Kano, North-west Nigeria.

President Tinubu, represented by the Minister for State, Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, stated that researches conducted when properly utilised can make significant impact in solving issues in campuses.

He said: “The government is aware of the difficulties universities are facing in terms of increase in electricity tariffs which culminated to huge bills. We are making significant efforts to make sure that the condition stabilise so that our universities can function optimally.

“However while we are making this conscious efforts, I will like to employ our universities to leverage on the researches conducted in order to come up with little solutions in terms of alternative power supply.”

President Tinubu added that the federal government is determined to continue to support the upgrade of university infrastructure, urging the managements not to rest in their efforts in exploring opportunities to attract private sector collaborations and investments.

The president called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to intervene in the land dispute between BUK and the neighboring communities as funds have been provided for the perimeter fencing of the institution by the federal government.

The vice chancellor, Bayero University, Kano, Professor Sangir Abbas, informed the visitor that the institution has graduated 8,769 from 18 faculties.

He said 176 were awarded first class degrees, 275 PhDs and 2,590 Masters degrees among others.

While urging the graduands to uphold values of integrity the institution was known for, Abbas expressed the determination of the university to excellence, research, innovation and community service through its vision for transformation.

He informed the gathering that, BUK emerged the 4th best universities in Nigeria and 43rd in Africa as contained in the latest university ranking.
