Let Election Results Reflect People’s Will

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Lagos State has congratulated Prof. Joash Amupitan on his recent appointment as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos, IPAC Secretary and Lagos State Chairperson of the Action People’s Party, Mrs. Abiola Adeyemi, hailed Amupitan’s appointment and called on him to use the position to enhance electoral integrity and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.

According to Adeyemi, the disillusionment of Nigerians with the electoral process has contributed to recurring voter apathy during elections.

“The biggest task before him is the restoration of public confidence in the electoral process, because this is long gone.

“We expect Amupitan to implement radical transparency and ensure legal backing for the electronic transmission of election results from polling units without glitches, to enhance election credibility.”

The IPAC scribe further urged the new INEC chairman to leverage technological innovations, such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, to eliminate manipulative practices in elections.

“He should ensure that INEC is shielded from partisan pressure and political interference. This is vital to restore confidence.

“Nigerians expect Prof. Amupitan to deliver credible, transparent, and fair elections, birthing an era of accountability and fairness in Nigeria’s democratic evolution,” Adeyemi added.

Adeyemi emphasized that electoral reforms are necessary to allow Nigerians to participate in the democratic process—contest, vote, and aspire—without fear or intimidation. She also urged the INEC chairman to tackle the persistent issue of vote buying and selling during elections.

Information Nigeria reported, that President Bola Tinubu appointed Amupitan, a Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as INEC Chairman on Thursday. His appointment has been ratified by the National Council of States.

Amupitan succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure as INEC chairman concluded after serving two statutory five-year terms since November 2015.
