Late Clark, Man of Many Firsts, Says Olorogun Okiemute

The revered elder statesman, Late Chief Dr. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, continues to receive posthumous accolades from across the country, with notable figures recognizing his unparalleled impact on Nigeria’s political, social, and economic development.

In his tribute, Olorogun Okiemute Oviri Okwagbe JP, the Eni of Ughwievwen Kingdom, described Chief Clark as a “man of many firsts,” whose towering legacy will never fade from history.

According to Olorogun Okwagbe, Chief Dr. E.K. Clark was a trailblazer in numerous ways, setting benchmarks in governance, advocacy, and leadership. “Chief Clark was the first in many spheres of our national development.

He was a first-rate nationalist, a first-class legal mind, and an exceptional advocate for the rights of marginalized communities. He pioneered progressive conversations that changed the trajectory of Nigeria’s federalism, making him an exceptional personality ,” Olorogun Okwagbe stated.

Reflecting on Chief Clark’s remarkable achievements, Olorogun Okwagbe highlighted that the late elder statesman was among the first political leaders in Nigeria to champion the cause of resource control for the Niger Delta.

“Before it became a mainstream conversation, Chief Clark was already advocating for the fair distribution of Nigeria’s wealth, ensuring that oil-producing communities received their rightful dues.

He was the first to boldly demand that justice be served to the Niger Delta people, paving the way for later struggles and eventual victories,” he emphasized.

Beyond his political influence, Chief Clark also made history as a distinguished legal expert and an educator. Olorogun Okwagbe noted that his establishment of Edwin Clark University remains one of his greatest contributions to education in Nigeria.

“It is rare to find an individual who has successfully navigated the complexities of politics, law, and education while leaving lasting footprints in each. Chief Clark was the first of his kind in ensuring that knowledge was not only preserved but actively disseminated for generations to come.”

Chief Clark’s contribution to Nigeria’s unity and democracy was also profound. He was instrumental in fostering inter ethnic relations and advocating for minority rights.

“When others hesitated, he stepped forward. When others were silenced, he spoke louder.
