The Lagos State Government has demolished more than 200 illegal shanties, evicted squatters, and cleared abandoned vehicles from under bridges along Apapa Road, Ijora, and Costain.
The massive operation, spearheaded by Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, involved a coordinated effort by multiple agencies to tackle longstanding issues of illegal encroachments, environmental degradation, and criminal hideouts in these key infrastructure zones.
A shocking find during the clearance under Costain Bridge highlighted the dangers: Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials uncovered a dummy gun and other hazardous weapons stashed beneath makeshift structures.
Giwa condemned the pre-clearance conditions as “a monumental affront to public decency, environmental order, and the collective security of Lagosians,” emphasizing that no responsible government could allow such chaos in areas critical to the state’s economy.
The drive targeted traffic robberies, drug peddling hubs, unauthorized garages, and derelict vehicles that had turned into criminal sanctuaries.
Key agencies on the ground included the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), and the Nigeria Police Force, working together to restore cleanliness, order, and safety.
Giwa issued a stern warning: any attempts by displaced individuals to return to the sites would trigger immediate penalties.
He praised the seamless inter-agency collaboration and called on residents to stay vigilant and compliant with the law.
Reaffirming Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision, Giwa pledged continued efforts to transform Lagos into a safer, cleaner, and more livable 21st-century megacity.
