Workers of the Lagos State Government, on Thursday, 4th of September, showcased their talent at the 19th edition of the state Head of Service [HOS] Games, which flags off at the state Rehabilitation Centre, Isheri-Berger.
The sports fiesta, aimed at promoting sportsmanship, fitness and camaraderie, was declared open by Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro.
Having witnessed a thrilling opening match which saw Team Public Service Office [PSO] defeated Team LASUTH by three goals to nil, Agoro, hinted all hands are on deck to ensure the tourney supersedes previous edition.
He urged participants to abide by the rules and maintain discipline throughout the competition, adding that winners in both male and female categories would receive trophies and other prizes.
“ This is just the tip of iceberg compare to other forthcoming games. We have been staging this since the past nineteen years and I’m sure this will supersedes previous edition.
“ I’m delighted with the games I watched today and i realised sports is a tool capable of uniting the people. I hope all participant embrace the spirit of sportsmanship while we enjoy the game. I can also assure you lots of prizes has been set aside for winners and I hope we all enjoy a memorable fiesta,” he stated.
In a similar vein, Permanent Secretary of the Public Service Office and Vice Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Mrs. Sunkanmi Oyegbola, expressed the state government’s delight at the broad participation of ministries, departments and agencies, stressing that the event highlights fitness, teamwork and staff welfare.
She however tasked her fellow women to see the championship as a tool for fitness building and promotion of gender equity in the world of sports.
“ It’s good seeing my fellow ladies displaying their talents. We all know women are no push over in the world of sports and I can assure everyone we’ll do our best in ensuring the tournament favours both gender. I’m pleased with what I saw on the field of play and I give kudos all all,” she appraised.
Meanwhile, member of the Local Organising Committee, Mr. Richard Ogbe, said measures had been put in place to ensure that only qualified staff participate, with medical and security teams on ground to safeguard players.
