The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Mr Jubril Emilagba, has urged residents and developers to comply with approved building regulations and remain vigilant against unsafe construction practices.
Emilagba gave the advice on Monday when he visited the site of a building collapse on Cole St., Ebute-Metta East, Lagos Mainland.
The News Agency Nigeria (NAN) reports that the affected building is a two-storey located at No. 54 Cole St.,in Ebute Metta East, Oyingbo area of Lagos.
He said poor compliance with safety standards and disregard for approved building plans were major causes of recurring building collapses in the state.
“Developers must follow due process before putting up any structure.
“No life should be lost because someone refused to follow building regulations. We must all take responsibility for safety in our communities,” he said.
The chairman said his administration would continue to work with state agencies to monitor construction activities and ensure that only safe and approved structures are erected within the local government.
He also commended emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the police, for their quick response to the incident.
Emilagba expressed sympathy to affected residents and promised that the council would assist them within available resources.
“We will keep supporting the victims while taking stronger steps to stop unsafe building practices,” he added.
NAN also reports that the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, in a situation report made available to newsmen wrote,“Update: One recovered dead as (survivors) rescued alive move to 26.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
