Lagos Govt Assures Residents Of Enhanced Safety Measures, Improved Emergency Response Systems  – Independent Newspaper Nigeria


Lagos State government has  assured its residents of renewed safety measures and improved emergency response systems following the recent fire at Afriland Towers in Broad Street, Lagos Island, which claimed seven lives.

Lagos State government officials, who briefed the press in Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday on the fire incident, sympathized with the families and communities affected by the tragic inferno. 

According to the officials, the fire, which began in the building’s basement, also destroyed valuables, leaving many in shock and disbelief. 

Residents were also urged to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours that could hamper rescue efforts.

Speaking during the briefing, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, who restated the state government’s commitment to protecting lives and property of the state residents, emphasized that safety protocols are being reviewed, and that emergency agencies are refining their operations to prevent similar incidents.

Also present at the briefing were the heads of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service; the Safety Commission; the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS); and the Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

In a separate incident that same day, traders at Central Plaza near Mandilas Market lost goods worth millions of Naira to another fire, prompting the government to call for stricter adherence to safety regulations and increased public cooperation with first responders.
