The Lagos State Government has confirmed the resumption of the second phase of rehabilitation works on the Ogudu–Ifako Bridge (inbound Island) starting Wednesday, September 3, 2025, following a temporary suspension due to severe traffic gridlock and heightened security concerns.
The announcement comes after the initial second phase began on August 19 but was halted around August 24 to reassess traffic management strategies amid rising incidents of traffic robberies exploiting the congestion.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement shared via official channels, emphasized that the repairs, focusing on the bridge’s expansion joints, will proceed in phases to minimize disruptions.
The project, originally slated to run until October 1, aims to enhance structural integrity and safety on the vital Kosofe Local Government Area bridge, which connects key routes to Oshodi and Victoria Island.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, noted that the pause allowed for collaboration with contractors and stakeholders to improve diversion plans.
“The project was paused to review traffic management plans. Work to continue during the week,” Musa stated, urging motorists to exercise patience and adhere to alternative routes.
To ease the impact, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reiterated diversion options:
Motorists from the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway/Toll Gate inbound Oshodi should use the Ojota Slip Road to connect Ikorodu Road toward Anthony (by Taxi Park).
For Victoria Island, take the Ojota Slip Road to Ikorodu Road (via Town Planning Way), link Gbagada, and access the Third Mainland Bridge.
Vehicles from Ikeja and environs can use Maryland to Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue, then Eko Bridge to Outer Marina.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki warned against one-way driving or traffic violations, with towing services and patrols deployed along routes.
The agency commended previous commuter cooperation and advised reporting incidents via the hotline: 080000527862.
This resumption aligns with the overall 110-day repair timeline announced in June, spanning eight phases across both lanes until mid-October.
Officials assured that enhanced security, including Rapid Response Squad (RRS) deployments, will protect commuters during the works.
