Lagos Doctors Threaten Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

The Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has threatened to embark on a solidarity strike in support of the Medical Guild.

The action will be taken if urgent measures are not implemented by the state government to address their concerns.

The warning follows salary deductions imposed in July 2025, which the association is demanding be refunded, alongside the full payment of August wages by August 25, 2025.

The resolution was reached at an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) convened by the NMA Lagos, where members reviewed the Guild’s 21-day ultimatum to the state government.

Long-standing issues, including the absence of call duty meals for doctors and the unresolved payment of skipping arrears at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), were also discussed.

In a communiqué signed by its chairman, Dr. Saheed Kehinde, the association stated, “We will commence our strike two weeks after the Medical Guild begins its action if the government fails to act.

“Our patience is running out, and doctors cannot continue to bear the brunt of administrative negligence.”

The strike threat comes after salary deductions first introduced on April 23, 2025, were briefly reversed following widespread protests but reappeared on July 23, 2025, prompting a three-day warning strike from July 28 to 30.

Addressing welfare concerns, the NMA condemned LUTH management for failing to provide call duty meals for over five years.

The association recalled a February 2025 meeting with the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, who proposed a paid canteen system instead of restoring free meals.

The NMA rejected this plan, emphasising that “doctors on call must be provided meals at no cost. We will not compromise on the welfare of our members.”

The communiqué also raised the issue of skipping arrears, noting that while other federal health institutions had paid, LUTH doctors remain excluded.

Calling for urgent intervention, the NMA urged the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, to ensure “the immediate refund of July deductions, timely payment of August salaries, and a permanent end to these obnoxious and crisis-prone deductions.

“ If these demands are not met, we will have no choice but to escalate our action to protect our rights and dignity.”
