Isese Day, dedicated to the celebration of Yoruba traditional religion and culture, has grown in significance across Nigeria, particularly in the Southwest.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s declaration follows a tradition of recognizing the day as a public holiday in Lagos, allowing citizens to participate in rituals, festivals, and community events that honor Yoruba deities and ancestors.

The decision has been met with widespread approval from traditional leaders and cultural enthusiasts. In a statement issued by the state government, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of preserving cultural identity in a rapidly modernizing world.

“Isese Day is a time to reflect on our rich heritage and values as Lagosians,” he said.

“This work-free day provides an opportunity for our people to connect with their roots, celebrate our traditions, and promote unity in our diverse state.”

Traditional rulers, including the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, have commended the governor’s decision, noting that it strengthens the recognition of Yoruba spirituality and cultural pride.

The holiday is expected to see public servants and residents engage in various activities, including visits to sacred sites, cultural performances, and communal prayers.

The Lagos State government has also urged citizens to use the day to promote peace and mutual respect across all religious and cultural groups.
