In a strong move to combat environmental degradation and promote sustainable development, the Lagos State Government has launched a crackdown on illegal dredging operations in Ikorodu area of the state.
Over 200 operators have been issued immediate stop-work orders, and several arrests were made during the enforcement action.
The operation was led by Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu,who was accompanied by his enforcement team.
All illegal dredging sites in Ikorodu were shut down, and stop-work notices were issued to the operators.
Alebiosu warned that failure to comply with the government’s orders would result in severe penalties, including the full closure of the affected sites.
He emphasized that illegal dredging activities are significant contributors to environmental challenges in the state, such as erosion and flooding.
He stressed the importance of adhering to established regulations to protect public infrastructure, roads, and wetlands.
“The government is committed to regulating dredging operations to meet international standards.”
He also urged registered miners to form an association to better tackle illegal mining practices.
