Dr. Kole Shettima, now 65, is a true champion of democracy and social justice. His work at the MacArthur Foundation, where he is strengthening democratic institutions, fighting for transparency and fairness, shows that he cares deeply about making society better. I believe his life is an example for all of us to emulate.
On February 12, 2025, the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja hosted a special event called “Role of Philanthropy in Strengthening Democracy in Africa.” Many respected people gathered to honour Dr Kole Shettima and his work.
Professor Jibrin Ibrahim said, “I always thought Kole would stick to Marxism and revolutionary ideas I taught him in school, but then he surprised me by turning to philanthropy”.
Muhammed Kati Machina added, “Even though our education system in Machina is far behind in Yobe state, but we are still producing global citizens like Dr. Kole Shettima. I can’t think of a better reason why he is so intentional about education.” His words remind us that strong education makes a strong nation.
United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed also praised Dr. Shettima. She said he is a true advocate for social justice and stands firm in his beliefs, helping to build a fairer world for everyone.
I was also moved by W.E.B. Du Bois’s words: “There can be no perfect democracy curtailed by colour, race, or poverty. But with all, we accomplish all, even peace.” These words remind us that every person deserves a fair chance.
In my opinion, Dr. Kole Shettima’s work is more than just a career, it is a commitment to fairness, education, and the idea that every person deserves a voice. His life shows us that building a just society takes honest leadership and constant effort. I hope more leaders will follow his example and help create a better future for all.
