Kogi Residents Urge Tinubu To Build Modern Market, Fix Idah–Ibaji Highway After Deadly Boat Tragedy

Kogi Residents Urge Tinubu To Build Modern Market, Fix Idah–Ibaji Highway After Deadly Boat Tragedy

Ibaji residents in Kogi State have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to authorize the construction of a modern market and the rehabilitation of the Idah–Ibaji–Anambra federal highway following a tragic boat accident that claimed over 100 lives.

The incident occurred when a heavily loaded wooden boat carrying traders from Ibaji to Ilushi Market in Edo State capsized, resulting in significant loss of life.

Addressing journalists in Lokoja on Saturday, the Coterie of Ibaji Youths of Nigeria (COIYN) appealed to the President to approve the establishment of a modern farm produce market in Ibaji and to fast-track the reconstruction of the deteriorating Idah–Ibaji–Otuocha highway.

The group linked the tragedy to the lack of critical infrastructure, including a standard market and reliable roads, which forces residents to depend on unsafe waterways for transporting their produce.

In a statement jointly signed by COIYN’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Tony Edike, and National Coordinator, Jerry Nwuchola, the organization decried the prolonged neglect of Ibaji Local Government Area and urged immediate federal intervention.

According to Nigerian Tribune, a statement further emphasized the need for a centrally located, functional market that would reduce the dangers traders face while crossing rivers to sell their goods.

“Despite being a major producer of rice, yams, cassava, fish, and vegetables, Ibaji lacks electricity, paved roads, good schools, and health facilities. This forces residents to travel in overcrowded boats to sell their produce. We passionately appeal to the government to construct a central market that reflects the value of Ibaji’s contributions to the national economy,” the statement said.

COIYN also called on the President to revive the abandoned Idah–Ibaji–Otuocha federal highway project, highlighting that it would shorten travel time between Anambra and Abuja while boosting economic activity.

According to the group, developing a modern market and rehabilitating the highway would help prevent future tragedies, stimulate trade, and create jobs for local residents.

“Your Excellency, we acknowledge your commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda. Hope is our lifeline, not just a slogan. We urge you, as the father of our nation, to honor the innocent lives lost in this tragedy by ensuring such disasters do not recur due to infrastructural neglect,” the group added.

President Tinubu had earlier extended condolences to the people and government of Kogi State, describing the incident as “shocking and unfortunate.”

COIYN expressed confidence that the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda would benefit Ibaji residents, ending decades of neglect and infrastructure decay.

The group concluded that the construction of a modern market and rehabilitation of the highway would reflect the President’s commitment to responsive and compassionate governance.
