Jurgen Klopp has left the door open for a potential return to Liverpool, admitting it is “theoretically possible” he could manage the club again in the future.

The 58-year-old stepped down as Liverpool boss at the end of the 2023/24 season after nearly a decade in charge, explaining that he was “running out of energy” and needed a break from the demands of top-level management.

‘If I did return, it would be Liverpool’

Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Klopp confirmed that Liverpool are the only English club he would ever consider coaching again.

“I said I will never coach another team in England, so if I ever return, it’s Liverpool,” Klopp stated. “So yes, theoretically, it’s possible.”

Klopp, now serving as global head of soccer at Red Bull since January, said he enjoys his new role and doesn’t miss the daily grind of management.

“I love what I do now. I don’t miss coaching or standing in the rain for three hours. I’ve coached over 1,000 games, I don’t want to die in the dressing room,” he said.

Turned down Manchester United in 2013

Klopp also disclosed that he once turned down Manchester United after discussions in 2013, following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

“Yes, I spoke to them,” he said. “They told me, ‘We can get any player we want,’ and I thought, that’s not my project. It was the wrong time and not the right fit.”

Enjoying life beyond the dugout

The former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool boss said he is in no rush to return to coaching, preferring to see what the future brings.

“I could make a decision in a few years, but I don’t have to now,” Klopp added. “For the first time in decades, I’m enjoying life without pressure.”

Klopp remains one of Liverpool’s most successful managers, having guided the club to Premier League, Champions League, and FIFA Club World Cup titles during his tenure.
