Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi state has approved the release of N54 million as dowry for 300 couples to be joined in a second mass marriage scheduled for the 27th of February, 2025, at the palace of the Emir of Gwandu in Birnin Kebbi.
A total of 600 brides and grooms deemed less privileged, are to be wedded under the government’s arrangement with provision of furniture, consisting of beds, beddings, mattresses and household utensils.
Chairman of the main committee for the celebration, former deputy governor of the state, Suleiman Muhammad Argungu, told newsmen in Birnin Kebbi, Sunday, that the success of last year’s mass wedding encouraged the government to repeat the same this year.
“300 couples were joined as husbands and wives last year, sponsored by Governor Nasir Idris, organised by the NANAS Foundation of his wife, Hajiya Nafisa.
“The governor has approved the conduct of another mass marriage of equal number this year, with the free payment of N180,000 dowry for each couple totalling N54 million.
“In addition, all room furniture to make the brides’ abodes glamorous, have been acquired for free distribution to them.
“Screening Committees have been established in all the 21 local government areas of the state to select appropriate couples who fall within the conditions outlined.
“Prospective grooms, even if vulnerable, must be income earners with appropriate trade or job, as well as shelter to accommodate the brides.
“All couples shall be subjected to blood (genotype) test, while prospective brides will undergo pregnancy test to ensure that they are pregnancy-free”, Argungu explained.
Suleiman Muhammad Argungu who is the National Organising Secretary of APC, made it clear that, couples would be selected among adherents of various religious faiths, and irrespective of political affiliations.
