Sheikh Nura Gwanda, Imam at Kofar Marusa Juma’at Mosque in Katsina, has called on both federal and state governments in Nigeria to establish Ministries of Family Affairs as a strategy to combat crime and moral decline.
Making the plea during his Friday sermon themed “Parenting as a Sacred Trust”, the cleric while highlighting the social challenges facing Nigeria, linked issues such as drug and substance abuse, thuggery, armed robbery, banditry, kidnapping, and corruption to the erosion of family values.
The Imam pointed out that countries in the Middle East and Europe have dedicated Ministries of Family Affairs responsible for matters relating to marriage, child upbringing, inheritance, domestic violence, child abuse, divorce, and child custody.

“Since the family is the cornerstone of society, creating a ministry to oversee family matters would significantly address problems like child destitution, lack of moral guidance, and the rising abandonment of children, especially in the northern region,” Sheikh Gwanda explained.
He further emphasized that a Ministry of Family Affairs could help tackle the root causes of insecurity, noting that many individuals involved in crime often come from broken homes or are abandoned children.
