The Economic And Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has received a petition against the Councillor of Doro Ward in Bindawa Local Government Area of Katsina State over alleged violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.
According to the Nigerian Tribune, a petition signed by Abuja-based Dr. Sani Ahmad accused the councillor of openly spraying and mishandling Naira notes at a recent social gathering. He stated that the act was carried out in the presence of witnesses and was also captured on video.
Dr. Ahmad, in the petition, cited Section 21 of the CBN Act, 2007, which makes it a criminal offence to tamper with Nigeria’s national currency.

The law clearly prohibits spraying, mutilating, or defacing the Naira, with offenders liable on conviction to a fine of not less than N50,000, six months’ imprisonment, or both.
“The Councillor, who as a public officer is expected to lead by example, disregarded this law by spraying and mishandling the Naira. Such actions send the wrong message to young people and undermine respect for our national currency,” the petition stated.
The petitioner urged the EFCC to investigate the matter thoroughly, prosecute the Councillor if found guilty, and use the case as a deterrent to other public officials. He stressed that respect for Nigeria’s financial laws is crucial in safeguarding the dignity and value of the Naira.
Dr. Ahmad further pledged his cooperation with investigators, noting that the petition was submitted in good faith to strengthen the country’s legal system and uphold the integrity of its financial regulations.
