1 week ago 24

The Kano State Censorship Board has launched a two-day capacity-building workshop for 50 women in the Kannywood film industry.

The workshop, “Women Behind the Camera,” focuses on training participants in directing and camera operation, with the goal of expanding their skill sets beyond acting and fostering self-reliance.

According to a statement released Wednesday by Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, Information Officer for the Kano State Censorship Board, this is the first such initiative in Kannywood’s history.

At the workshop’s opening at the ARTV Theater, Board Executive Secretary Abba El-Mustapha stated that it will significantly contribute to changing the narrative for current and future generations of female filmmakers.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya, urged participants to incorporate Islamic teachings and respect Hausa culture, norms, and values in their work.

He also announced plans to elevate Kannywood by collaborating with Bollywood and adopting global best practices.

Hajia Rashida Maisa’a, Chairlady of the Kannywood Actresses, thanked the Executive Secretary for the training opportunity, calling it timely and highlighting the need for female representation in various film production roles, including directing and camera operation.
