A Kano State High Court has sentenced a local football coach, Hayatu Mohammed, to eight years in prison after finding him guilty of sodomising one of his players on two separate occasions.
Mohammed, a resident of Sanka Quarters in Dala Local Government Area, was convicted without an option of fine after the court ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
During the trial, Prosecuting Counsel, Ibrahim Arif Garba, presented five witnesses who testified against the coach, narrating how the incidents took place at different locations in Kano.

Delivering judgment, the Presiding Judge held that the evidence presented during the proceedings clearly established the defendant’s guilt.
The court sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment on each of the two counts, to run consecutively, making a total of eight years behind bars.
Justice further noted that the act contravened Section 284 of the Penal Code Law, which criminalises unnatural offences in the state.
