KANO – The Kano State Government on Friday night alleged a coordinated plot to destabilise the state following the dramatic arrest of former Chairman of the Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, by heavily armed operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.
Addressing newsmen Friday night, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude SAN, described the operation as politically motivated and executed in a manner capable of undermining public peace.
He said the arrest which occurred at about 5:30 p.m. at Muhuyi’s law office along Zaria Road was carried out without a warrant or prior notice to the state’s justice system.
In his words “The manner, timing, and militarized nature of the arrest are particularly disturbing,” the statement said, noting that Muhuyi was immediately moved from Kano to Abuja on the same evening.”
The Attorney General expressed alarm over what he called a deliberate attempt by “certain political elements operating from outside the State” to deploy federal security institutions in a way that could threaten Kano’s stability.
Kabiru Maude said “The Kano State Government is deeply worried that external political forces may be deliberately attempting to exploit federal institutions to destabilize Kano State,” he stated.
According to the Kano State government, “the use of over 40 heavily armed officers to arrest a civilian was excessive and unjustified, especially in a state facing serious security challenges.”
The Attorney General described the operation as “highly shocking and deeply troubling,” adding that such deployment would have been more appropriate at known criminal flashpoints rather than against a former public official.
He further alleged that the arrest may be linked to efforts to frustrate ongoing high-profile corruption investigations involving influential political actors. It noted that Muhuyi, as former PCACC chairman, is believed to possess critical evidence in several sensitive cases.
“The timing and manner of his arrest raise grave fears that the action is calculated to obstruct, destabilize, or compromise the integrity of those investigations,” the Attorney General warned.
The Commissioner maintained that beyond political interference, the government condemned what it described as the Police’s blatant disregard for the rule of law.
He said a valid High Court order restraining security agencies from arresting or harassing Muhuyi remained in force at the time of the operation.
“This can only be described as a dangerous and excessive operation conducted in defiance of a lawful order,” the statement added.
The Kano State Government therefore cautioned security agencies against actions capable of generating public tension or portraying law enforcement in a partisan light.
The Kano number one law officer warned that “Any action, from whatever quarter, that is capable of provoking public disorder or casting institutional law enforcement in a political light must be firmly rejected,” the Attorney General declared.
He, however assured citizens that Kano remains peaceful and committed to upholding democratic governance. It reiterated its willingness to cooperate with security agencies, provided such cooperation aligns with constitutional provisions and respects due process.
