Three people lost their lives while several shops were destroyed in two separate incidents involving a petrol tanker crash and a fire outbreak in Kano State.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed that the first incident occurred around 1:30pm along Zaria Road at the Kura Market junction in Kura Local Government Area in Friday.

The agency received a distress call from a retired Civil Defence officer, Danlami Muhammad, reporting that a petrol tanker had fallen and gone up in flames.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a tanker with registration number NGZ 250 XA carrying 30,000 litres of petrol engulfed by fire. The truck had also hit a cyclist who was walking by the roadside.

The agency’s Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said four people were affected in the incident. Three victims were found unconscious and later confirmed dead, while the cyclist survived.

Firefighters, working in collaboration with the police and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), brought the situation under control. The remains of the victims were handed over to ASP Ahmad Lawan of the Kura Police Division. Two fire trucks from the headquarters and the Kura station were deployed.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

In a second incident at about 2:45pm, the fire service received another emergency call reporting a blaze at Hamisu Plaza along Maiduguri Road in Tarauni Local Government Area.

Firemen deployed from the headquarters, supported by a fire truck stationed at the ongoing Kano Trade Fair, arrived to find the upper floor of a two-storey commercial building measuring 200 by 200 feet on fire.

Abdullahi said the fire affected three shops on the upper floor, while two others were spared. Firefighters were able to save the remaining shops on both floors of the building.

The cause of the fire is also being investigated.

The Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, appealed to residents to exercise caution, especially during the harmattan season, and to observe fire safety measures to prevent avoidable disasters.

He also advised motorists to adhere to traffic regulations to minimise road accidents.
