Kaduna police violating constitution – El-Rufai reacts to summon over ADC meeting

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused
the state Commissioner of Police of violating the constitution.

El-Rufai said the summon sent to him was a dangerous descent
into lawlessness by the state police Command.

The state police command had earlier allegedly prevented a
scheduled meeting of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, from holding in the
state.

The Command subsequently summoned El-Rufai and seven members
of the ADC for questioning.

It accused the former governor and ADC members of alleged
criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief, and causing
grievous hurt.

The summon said the ADC Chairman in the state should produce
El-Rufai and others at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, on
September 8.

Responding, El-Rufai condemned the action of the state
Police Command.

Addressing a press conference at his private residence in
Kaduna, the former governor said: “The commissioner knows what he is doing
violates the Constitution.

“He waved a piece of paper claiming it was a court order,
but it was never served.

“Even if such an order exists, it must be legally delivered
before it can take effect. That has not happened.

“This is a dangerous descent into lawlessness. We want to
see that injunction, we want to know the grounds, and we will contest them in
court. This is not the end— further steps will follow.”
