The Kaduna State Government has expressed concern over the low turnout of citizens in the ongoing voter registration exercise and called for intensified mobilisation across the state.

Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, made the remarks on Friday.

The comments were delivered during a stakeholders’ meeting convened to address challenges affecting the voter registration exercise and develop strategies to increase participation.

Maiyaki said Governor Uba Sani had taken proactive steps to encourage eligible voters to register.

“We want every eligible citizen to have the opportunity to exercise their democratic right. Low turnout undermines the strength of our democracy,” he stated.

Preliminary reports from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) indicate that Kaduna State and the North West are lagging behind in registration figures.

“This is a wake-up call for all stakeholders. We cannot afford to leave our citizens unregistered,” Maiyaki added.

He highlighted the roles of council chairmen, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and the media in mobilising citizens across communities.

“We are counting on local leaders to lead by example and encourage grassroots participation.

“Their influence can significantly boost registration numbers,” the commissioner said.

Maiyaki commended council chairmen who had already launched sensitisation campaigns.

“Your efforts are appreciated, and we hope to see even greater coordination in the coming weeks,” he noted.

The engagement was structured in two phases: an opening session with the media to highlight objectives, followed by a technical session with council chairmen to harmonise grassroots mobilisation strategies.

Maiyaki concluded: “This exercise is not partisan; it is about empowering citizens. We must ensure that every eligible voter is reached, informed, and motivated to register.”
