This is sad and worrisome – PDP
By Noah Ebije, Kaduna
The recent defection of 21 members of the major opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State has given the opposition party serious concerns and worries.
Of great concern is the defection of Hon. Amos Gwamna Magaji, the representative for Jaba/Zango Kataf Federal Constituency in Kaduna State.
Citing unresolved crises within the PDP at both national and local levels, Magaji announced his decision, marking his first defection from the PDP to the APC in the House of Representatives since the inauguration of the 10th Assembly.
As a two-term lawmaker, Magaji has held key positions, including Chairman of the House Committee on Health Care Services and Deputy Chairman of the Special Ad-hoc Committee on the Restructuring of Government Agencies and Commissions. His departure from the PDP underscores the ongoing realignments in Nigeria’s political landscape and positions him as a key player within the APC.
However, the PDP Chairman, Appeal and Reconciliation Committee, Kaduna State Chapter, Shuaibu Idris Miqati, noted with regret that the defection of PDP members to the APC in Kaduna was sad and most worrisome.
Miqati disclosed that the committee has commenced work in earnest with maximum support from party elders and leaders, with commitments to make amends where irregularities were established.
To this end, he added that with the ongoing reconciliation, it was not justifiable for any member to leave the party.
With his recent defection to the APC, Amos Gwamna Magaji brings a wealth of education, professional expertise, and political experience to his new party. His academic background, leadership in occupational safety, business acumen, family values, and personal interests make him a dynamic figure in Nigerian politics.
As he continues his journey in the House of Representatives, his diverse skill set and policy expertise are expected to play a significant role in shaping the political landscape of Kaduna State and beyond.
But who is Magaji beyond his recent defection from the PDP to become the newest APC member in the House of Representatives? A highly educated leader with a passion for continuous learning, Amos Magaji is one of the most academically accomplished members of the House of Representatives. His journey in education began at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Human Physiology in 2000.
However, his thirst for knowledge did not stop there. Over the years, he pursued advanced education in multiple fields, earning a PhD in Environmental Resource Management. This achievement reflects his expertise in addressing environmental and ecological challenges, which is crucial in today’s governance.
In addition to his doctorate, Magaji has obtained three master’s degrees, further showcasing his dedication to diverse areas of knowledge. He earned a Master’s in Health Management from Benue State University in 2009, a Master’s in Occupational Health and Safety from Edith Cowan University, Australia, in 2013, and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from the National Open University of Nigeria in 2016.
Currently, he is expanding his legal expertise by pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, along with a Master’s in Risk and Disaster Management.
Beyond these degrees, Magaji has completed various postgraduate studies, earning diplomas and certifications in Environmental Health, Management, Education, Occupational Health, and Theology.
His studies have taken him to prestigious institutions such as the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the British Safety Council, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to professional development. His extensive academic background positions him as a knowledgeable and resourceful lawmaker capable of tackling complex governance issues.
An authority in occupational safety, health, and risk management
Before joining politics, Magaji built a strong reputation in the field of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). His work in this area has been extensive, making significant contributions to public safety, risk management, and workplace health. One of his most notable roles was serving as a Shell Consultant on Occupational Safety and Health, where he worked on ensuring compliance with international safety standards in one of Nigeria’s largest oil and gas companies.
His leadership extended beyond consulting, as he served as both Vice Chairman and later Chairman of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria. In this role, he played a key part in shaping national policies and safety standards across industries. His expertise in this field has also led him to train professionals in risk management, environmental safety, and industrial health regulations.
Magaji is affiliated with multiple professional organisations that recognise his impact in occupational safety. He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), the British Hygiene Society, the Australian Safety Association, and the American Society of Safety Professionals.
Additionally, his role as a Lead Auditor in Risk and Safety Management (ISO 14000) highlights his experience in maintaining global environmental and workplace safety standards. His vast knowledge in these areas gives him a unique perspective in legislative matters concerning public health, safety policies, and industrial regulations.
A diverse professional background that extends beyond politics
Magaji’s professional experience is not limited to safety and risk management. Over the years, he has taken on various leadership roles in business consultancy, environmental health, and organisational development. He served as a Regional Manager at Comet Group, where he was responsible for overseeing operations, safety compliance, and strategic planning for corporate clients.
His expertise as a business consultant has also been in high demand. He has provided advisory services to organisations in areas such as risk mitigation, workplace efficiency, and environmental sustainability. His work has helped companies develop better safety standards, reduce operational hazards, and create sustainable business models.
Additionally, his extensive experience as a trainer and consultant in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) has made him a sought-after expert in both corporate and government sectors.
A family-oriented individual with strong personal values
Despite his numerous professional and political engagements, Amos Magaji remains deeply connected to his family. He has been married to Doreen Eneayi Magaji since 2003, and their union has been blessed with four children: Godiya Gabriella Magaji, Hanum Joseph Magaji, Rainum Joshua Magaji, and Saraya Finum Tehillah Magaji.
Magaji has always emphasised the importance of maintaining a strong family bond despite the demands of public service. He believes that a well-balanced personal life is essential for effective leadership, as it helps foster integrity, compassion, and a sense of responsibility. His ability to juggle his professional, academic, and political commitments while staying grounded in his family life reflects his strong personal values and leadership qualities.
Recognition for public health advocacy
Magaji recently added a feather to his cap when the Presidency, in collaboration with Global Health Advocacy Incubator, honoured him with the ‘Legislative Champion for Public Health Resilience’ award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of the health sector in Nigeria.
The Head of Projects, Office of the Chairman, Healthcare Services Committee, Seth Bakut, said the award ceremony was spectacular at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, Special Adviser to the President on Health, Dr Salma Ibrahim Anas, and stakeholders in the health sector in attendance.
