The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated that Mathematics remains a mandatory subject for all students sitting for O-Level examinations, such as WAEC and NECO, dispelling recent misconceptions about its requirement.
The clarification, issued on October 19, 2025, by the Federal Ministry of Education, follows confusion sparked by a recent policy change on university admission requirements.
Boriowo Folashade, Ministry spokesperson, stated, “All students must continue to register and sit for English Language and Mathematics in their O-Level examinations.
This policy ensures equitable access and supports human capital development.” The statement addresses concerns arising from a October 14, 2025, announcement that removed the Mathematics credit requirement for university admissions in arts and humanities programs, while retaining it for science, technology, and social science courses.
The Ministry emphasized that the admission reform does not alter the compulsory status of Mathematics in O-Level exams, a longstanding policy designed to maintain educational standards.
“Mathematics and English are foundational for critical thinking and national development,” Folashade added.
The clarification has sparked discussions among educators and parents, with many welcoming the reaffirmation of Mathematics’ importance.
The Federal Government urged stakeholders to rely on verified information to avoid confusion and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing education reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
