Joe Igbokwe, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, has expressed shock and concern over the recent demolition of 19 structures in the Trade Fair area, questioning the rationale behind the state government’s actions.
On Thursday, operatives from the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences, accompanied by security agents, stormed the bustling Trade Fair complex to demolish what authorities described as “illegal developments.”
The affected structures, including shops and buildings, were allegedly erected without statutory approvals, deemed defective, or constructed on road setbacks and drainage channels, violating urban planning regulations.
The operation, which disrupted activities in one of Lagos’ key commercial hubs, has sparked outrage among traders and residents.
Reacting via a post on his verified Facebook page, Igbokwe, a well-known political figure voiced his dismay. “What is happening at Trade Fair? I am shocked!” he wrote, seeking clarity on the demolitions.
He revealed that he shares patronage of the market with Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and Labour Party leader, and the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, reflecting the market’s significance to prominent stakeholders.
Igbokwe’s post, which quickly gained traction, amplified calls for transparency and dialogue from affected traders, many of whom claim they were not given prior notice.
