1 week ago 34

The Flour Milling Association of Nigeria (FMAN), in partnership with the Jigawa State Government, successfully hosted the Wheat Farmers’ Green Field Day in Dabi Village, Ringim LGA, bringing together farmers, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to accelerate wheat production in Nigeria.

More than just a showcase of thriving wheat fields, the event provided hands-on agronomic training, equipping farmers with the tools to boost productivity and profitability. It reaffirmed FMAN’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s wheat value chain through innovation, farmer empowerment, and strategic partnerships.

FMAN’s Commitment to Wheat Development

Over the past five years, FMAN has played a crucial role in Nigeria’s journey toward wheat self-sufficiency. Key achievements include:

Empowering over 21,000 farmers with input loans, Establishing 504 village-level collection points, Training over 160,000 farmers across 15 Northern States, Releasing and registering four high-yielding wheat varieties, with an average yield of 3.5 tons per hectare, Creating over 800,000 indirect jobs amongst several others
Collaborations with Jigawa State.

The partnership between FMAN and the Jigawa State Government is transforming wheat production and farmer livelihoods. Launched in the 2023/2024 season, the collaboration initially supported 5,000 farmers with input loans, repayable in grains at harvest. This initiative yielded remarkable results, with farmers achieving an average of 3–3.5 metric tons per hectare.

Building on this success, the program has been significantly expanded for the 2024/2025 season. Now, 10,000 farmers have been empowered with input loans under the same structured repayment model. To strengthen extension services, over 100 Jigawa indigenes have been employed as full-time extension agents, while more than 50,000 farmers have received training to enhance productivity and sustainability in wheat farming.

This strategic collaboration underscores a shared commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s wheat value chain, enhancing food security, and driving economic prosperity for farmers in Jigawa and beyond.

Bridging the Wheat Supply Gap, With Nigeria still importing over 90% of its wheat consumption, FMAN’s initiatives towards improving local capacities is deployed through the following programs:

The Outgrower Program: Providing farmers with agro-inputs on a loan basis, with repayment in harvested grains.

Demonstration Farms: Implementing research-backed, adaptable technologies through a hands-on “Show & Do” approach.

Seed Production: Partnering with certified seed companies to ensure the availability of high-yielding wheat varieties.

Research & Development: Establishing a 10-hectare research farm in Jigawa for varietal trials and agronomic improvements.

Farmer Training, Data Management & Financial Inclusion: Conducting extensive training programs, financial literacy campaigns, and digital data collection for improved farm management.

A Successful Green Field Day, Green Field Day was a game-changer, giving farmers direct access to innovative farming techniques, improved seed varieties, and expert agronomic guidance. Farmers expressed gratitude for the training, recognizing its potential to significantly enhance yields and incomes.

Speaking at the event, FMAN and Jigawa State representatives reaffirmed their commitment to empowering farmers and strengthening Nigeria’s wheat industry. With continued collaboration, Nigeria is on the path to a sustainable, self-sufficient wheat sector.
