Dr. Gumel brings a wealth of experience to the role. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of Tropical General Investments (TGI) Group and Chairman of WACOT Rice Limited.

His leadership in agriculture and finance has earned him national recognition, including his previous role as Chairman of the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA).

In August 2025, Dr. Gumel’s influence extended beyond Nigeria when he was appointed Chairman of Botswana’s newly launched Sovereign Wealth Fund by President Duma Gideon Boko.

With nearly two decades of experience and a strong academic foundation from Newcastle University, he is widely regarded as a bridge between private enterprise and public policy.

The Lagos State Government said the appointment was part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to improving the quality of education in state-owned higher institutions.

The new Governing Council is expected to steer LASU toward greater academic excellence and institutional reform.
