Japa plans ruined as man’s investment crashes from ₦400k to ₦30k

A Nigerian man identified as Anthony has shared the heartbreaking story of his biggest life regret, losing almost his entire savings to a failed stock market investment.

Speaking in a street interview with content creator @ekaftv, Anthony revealed that as a secondary school student, he invested about ₦400,000 into the Nigerian Stock Exchange, hoping it would secure his future. Instead, the value of his shares plummeted to just ₦30,000 during the 2007–2008 market crash.

Anthony recalled that his investment initially grew to about ₦500,000 before the sudden downturn wiped it out. He had planned to use the funds to travel abroad after securing a visa, but was forced to abandon his dream of relocating to South Africa when the shares lost almost all their value.

“One heartbreak and pain from my past life is the investment I made when I was in secondary school. I thought if I invested, it would make my life meaningful. I invested over ₦400,000 in the stock exchange, and when I checked around 2007–2008, it was worth less than ₦30,000. Since then, even though I had a visa, I couldn’t travel again,” he said.

Anthony explained that the investment was made through Vision Trust, which later rebranded as Harmony. He admitted that the shares had begun to recover slightly in recent years, but the financial damage had already changed the course of his life.

Reflecting on the painful loss, Anthony said the greatest mistake was ignoring advice to buy land instead. At the time, plots were selling for about ₦50,000, an opportunity he now regrets missing.

“Somebody advised me then to buy land for ₦50,000, but I refused. Had it been I bought properties those days, I could have been one of the millionaires in the world today. That’s why I can’t advise anybody to buy shares again,” he added.
