Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr has called for calm and sportsmanship ahead of Tuesday’s decisive World Cup qualifier against Nigeria in Uyo, stressing that the encounter should not be treated as a war.
His side, the Cheetahs need only a draw to book their place at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Nigeria, meanwhile, must win by at least two clear goals to keep their qualification hopes alive.
The other fixture in Group C will see South Africa host Rwanda, a game that could further shape the group’s final standings.

‘It’s football, not war’ – Rohr
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Rohr, who previously managed the Super Eagles, reminded everyone that the game should be played in the spirit of unity and respect.
“It’s not a war, it’s a football game. Whatever will be the result, we will leave here and we will stay friends,” he said.
“Now the moment for us is to be ready, to be relaxed, and to have a good game tomorrow.”
Tight race in Group C
Benin Republic currently lead the group with 17 points, followed by South Africa on 15 points, while Nigeria sit third with 14 points.
The Super Eagles must deliver a convincing win to avoid missing back-to-back World Cup appearances for the first time in nearly four decades.
