Iran Condemns US Sanctions On Oil Shipments, Calls Move ‘Unlawful’

2 weeks ago 14

Iran has condemned new US sanctions on oil shipments, calling them “unlawful” and accusing Washington of economic bullying.

Iran has strongly criticised Washington’s decision to impose new shipping-related sanctions, describing the move as an illegitimate attempt to block its legitimate trade with economic partners.

The US Treasury announced on Thursday that it was sanctioning several individuals and tankers involved in transporting millions of barrels of Iranian crude oil per year to China.

The sanctions mark the first action taken against Iran’s oil sector since US President Donald Trump vowed earlier this week to reduce Iran’s crude exports to zero. The move is part of a broader strategy to curb Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

In response, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, denounced the sanctions as an unlawful measure designed to exert pressure on the Iranian people.

“The decision of the new US administration to exert pressure on the Iranian people by preventing Iran from conducting legitimate trade with its economic partners is an illegitimate and unlawful action,” Baghaei was quoted as saying by Iran’s official news agency, IRNA.

He further warned that Iran holds the United States responsible for any consequences arising from what he described as “unilateral and bullying actions.”

The sanctions are expected to heighten tensions between Tehran and Washington, adding further strain to diplomatic efforts surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme and its economic dealings with global partners.
