IPOB Applauds Canadian Court Ruling Labeling APC, PDP As Terrorist Groups

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has applauded what it describes as a “significant ruling” by a Canadian court, claiming that Nigeria’s leading political parties—the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—have been designated as terrorist organisations.

In a press statement dated August 16, 2025, and signed by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, the group described the purported decision as a “defining moment” that “marks a shift in global awareness of the situation in Nigeria, particularly with respect to allegations of human rights abuses and political repression.”

Referencing the Nigerian civil war of 1967–1970, IPOB noted that historical grievances continue to shape its quest for self-determination. The group emphasised that its activities remain non-violent, rooted in lawful and peaceful advocacy.

The statement further criticised previous attempts by Nigerian authorities to proscribe IPOB, calling such measures “politically motivated.” IPOB urged renewed international focus on the rights of indigenous communities advocating for self-determination.

As of this report, there has been no independent confirmation of the alleged Canadian court ruling from official Canadian judicial sources. The Nigerian government, APC, and PDP have yet to respond publicly to IPOB’s claims.

IPOB has been officially proscribed in Nigeria since 2017, a designation the group rejects, insisting it operates as a peaceful advocacy movement.
