The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Nyesom Wike, has set machineries in place to address the increasing influx of almajiri and other individuals with security concerns into the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Following the expanded security meeting which was led by the Minister in Abuja, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, while speaking to journalists revealed that the FCT minister has directed the formation of a committee to address the influx of almajiri and other persons considered security threats into the FCT.
The committee, he said, comprises of members from the FCT security agencies, including the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Army, the DSS, and the NSCDC, and is tasked with several key responsibilities. These include working with area council chairmen to identify schools where almajiri children are being taught, profiling organisers of the schools, including their pictures and phone numbers, and determining the content of the training provided to the students.
The committee is expected to submit its report to the FCT minister within two weeks.
Disu said: “This afternoon, we just had an expanded security meeting with the Hon. Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, which includes the chairmen of the area councils. A lot of issues bothering on security were discussed. But mainly, we focused on the issue of influx of people into the FCT, especially the almajiri.
“The minister at the end of the meeting directed that a committee be set up by us and that he awaits the outcome of it in two weeks.
“The committee has the mandate to see how it is going to work with the area council chairmen for to identify schools where these children are being brought in to learn, to profile those organising the schools, to have the pictures, phone numbers of those organising the schools and to work out means of working with them.”
