ABUJA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has inaugurated Professor Ayobami Rahmon as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Oyo State, charging him to uphold integrity and reinforce confidence in the state’s electoral processes.
The brief inauguration ceremony was held on Tuesday at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja, where INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, administered the oath of office.
Addressing the newly sworn-in REC, Prof. Amupitan said the role comes at “a defining moment,” emphasising Oyo State’s importance as a major political battleground.
“You must fully appreciate the magnitude of the assignment before you,” the Chairman noted. “The Commission expects unwavering professionalism, honesty, and strict compliance with the Electoral Act. The credibility of our elections depends significantly on the conduct of officers like you.”
He reiterated INEC’s commitment to strengthening electoral technology and restoring public confidence. “There is no room for errors. Your activities will be closely monitored by political stakeholders, civil society organisations, the media, and—above all—the electorate. You must demonstrate that the trust placed in you is well-deserved,” he said.
Prof. Amupitan also encouraged the new REC to prioritise engagement with key actors. “Dialogue is essential. Build strong relationships with political parties, traditional institutions, security agencies, and community leaders. Stakeholder confidence makes election management far smoother,” he added.
In his remarks, Prof. Rahmon thanked the Commission for the confidence shown in him and vowed to uphold its principles. “I remain committed to impartiality, transparency, and professionalism. I will work diligently to enhance the integrity of elections in Oyo State,” he assured.
He further pledged to foster peaceful participation and maintain constructive collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Prof. Rahmon is expected to resume duties immediately at the Oyo State INEC office.
