According to Sahara reporter, Ogbonna who was brought to court in handcuffs, is facing a four-count charge bordering on alleged cyberbullying and defamation. The charges stem from claims that he circulated a voice note on social media which allegedly maligned Chinasa Nwaneri, the Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on Compliance.
His prolonged detention and trial have triggered criticism from journalists and media stakeholders in Imo State. Colleagues of the embattled publisher condemned his arrest, describing it as an attack on press freedom and a disturbing attempt to gag the media.
They also called on the state’s Commissioner of Police to caution officers against being used as instruments by political officeholders to intimidate journalists and ordinary citizens.
