Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emphasized his commitment to building a better Nigeria over personal presidential ambitions during an affirmation ceremony for new African Democratic Congress (ADC) defectors in Lagos on Saturday, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Abubakar, represented by Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, addressed the gathering where prominent figures from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) formally joined the ADC.
Having recently resigned from the PDP to join the ADC alongside like-minded opposition politicians, Abubakar clarified his focus.
“Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. It’s not about him being president. It’s about having a government that delivers for Nigerians,” Olateju conveyed on his behalf.
He described the ADC as a movement for a better Nigeria, not merely a political party.Olateju stressed that the ADC’s mission is to reposition Nigeria for greatness, marking a departure from traditional politics.
“It’s a new beginning. We need a new Nigeria, and that’s what Atiku is championing. It’s not about him becoming president at all costs but about Nigeria delivering for its people,” he said.
Addressing challenges like fuel subsidy removal and inflation, Abubakar expressed confidence that good leadership could transform Nigeria, with the ADC coalition poised to drive change.
On the ADC’s 2027 presidential candidate, Abubakar noted that the decision lies with the party’s members through a fair process. “Whoever emerges through free and fair contests, we will support.
It’s about a better Nigeria, not Atiku or anyone else for president at all costs,” Olateju relayed, emphasizing collective aspirations over individual ambition.
Notable defectors included PDP Board of Trustee member Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu, former Lagos PDP chairmen Chief Muritala Ashorobi and Retired Capt.
Tunji Shelle, PDP Vice Chairman (Lagos Central), and former PDP Youth Leader Mr. Tai Benedict, among others.
They were welcomed by ADC leaders, including National Secretary Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Sen. Kolawole Ogunwale, and Lagos State ADC Chairman Mr. George Ashiru.
