To check the rising cases of controllable illnesses among Nigerians, Lions International, Leo District 404-B2 Nigeria, Ikeja Leo Club, has carried out free medical checks for residents of Lagos State.

President of Ikeja Leo Club, Leo Oyewole Sadiq Adeniyi, while speaking at the medical outreach held at the New Garage, Bariga/Gbagada, on Saturday, noted that the Medical Outreach 2.0, was an arm of the youth activity of Ikeja Lions Club, to test sugar level, HIV BMI, blood level, and others, among residents of the area.

He said that the outreach is a core project of the club in this Lion Service year.

On why the medical project was conducted in the New Garage, Bariga/Gbagada area, Adeniyi said: “First in this environment, we noticed that there are a lot of people here that do not have time to go to the hospitals for check-ups. Due to their busy daily activities, they have no time to take care of their health.

“I also observed that this particular spot is being used regularly for medical check-up.”

Adeniyi said that before the commencement of the programme, the Leo Club sensitised residents of the area on the need to avail themselves of the medical check-ups.

Noting that they had targeted a maximum of 50 persons before the end of the outreach, Adeniyi noted that they attended to 70 persons and above as the outreach came to a close.

He noted that Leo Club has done a lot of humanitarian services by giving back to the community with the little they have, adding: “For this Lion service year, we have been able to do welcome-back to school for the students; we have given out some items free of charge. Last year, we did the 1.0, free medical check-ups, which took place at MaryLand, and this is the 2.0., which is happening here today. I believe that after this project, we are still going to work on more projects before the end of this Lion service year.”

On what they intend to do to people with serious health cases, Adeniyi said: “We know that some people might need medication. What we do is to refer them to professional doctors. What we can do here is to only advise them to take enough rest and do a little exercise to relieve the stress. We direct them to the medical doctors, who will prescribe medication for them.”

Project Director, Leo Club 2024/2025, Leo Imoleayo Hannah Adelaja, commended the club for the medical project.

Adelaja said that the project is the club’s way of helping people, as many Nigerians are walking about without knowing their health status.

According to her, “Organisinng this kind of project will make them come for body check-ups to make them know if there is something wrong with them.”

On efforts to make the project possible, Adelaja said that the club invited medical practitioners, as well as mobilised fellow Leo Club members to contribute to make sure that the project is a success.

She advised Nigerians to always go for medical check-up, as “Most people walk around without knowing what they carry about within them.”

Second Vice President, Leo Ikeja Lions Club, Simbiat Oguns, expressed satisfaction with the massive turnout of people, saying: “It was more than what we expected. We thank God that we were able to achieve this.”

On the other projects of Leo Club, she said: “We had our first medical project last year at Ikeja and it was successful. We are doing the second medical outreach today. That is why the Ikeja Leo Club is making medical projects a habit in this Lions Club service year.”

On how they get funds to finance projects, she said that they task themselves to raise funds.

She advised Nigerians to always go for medical check-ups.
