The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued over N2 billion cheques to 1,574 beneficiaries under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes covering 2015 to 2025, including overdue claims pending for nearly a decade.
Blueprint reports that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) under IGP Egbetokun has paid ₦24.2 billion to 9,735 families of deceased officers across the country.
Speaking during the presentation of cheques to next of kin of the deceased officers, Wednesday at the Force Headquarters Abuja, the police boss said: “We gather here today with hearts that are both heavy and grateful. Heavy, because we remember the painful loss of gallant men and women who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
“Grateful, because their sacrifices continue to inspire us to uphold the ideals of courage, honour, and integrity upon which this Force is built.
“This ceremony is not just another official function. It is a solemn duty of remembrance and responsibility, a demonstration that the NPF does not abandon its own. Behind every badge is a family that bears the weight of sacrifice, and we will never forget them.”
Egbetokun stated: “In this phase of the exercise, we are presenting cheques amounting to N2,171,124,041.87k to 1,574 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased officers under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes. These benefits cover policy years from 2015 to 2025, including recoveries of claims that had remained outstanding for close to a decade.
“Through persistent engagement, we redeemed these claims to ensure that justice is done to the families who waited patiently for so long. Since I assumed office as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police, today marks the 11th phase of this welfare exercise.
“In that time, we have disbursed a cumulative #24.2 billion to 9,735 families of our fallen heroes. This is more than a statutory duty; it is a sacred trust – a trust to ensure that the memory of our departed officers remains alive and their families are not left behind.”
The Police boss, who noted that no amount of money could replace the loss of a loved one, assured, “We are building a system that is transparent, responsive, and fair, so that no family of a deceased officer is ever left unattended or forgotten.”
He pledged comprehensive reforms to strengthen the Police welfare system, including digitising processes to ensure prompt payment of entitlements and prevent unnecessary delays.
Family members of the deceased officers appreciated the IGP for the payment of death benefits of their loved ones.
