Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has initiated a comprehensive inquiry into allegations that a recent airstrike in Katsina State resulted in civilian casualties.
Reports indicate that on Saturday, an air operation targeting armed criminals in Yauni, Zakka ward, Safana Local Government Area, inadvertently claimed the lives of seven civilians, including six members of the same family.
In response, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through its Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, described the situation as “deeply troubling,” He reassured the public of the military’s dedication to uncovering the facts surrounding the incident.
“The reports alleging civilian casualties following the airstrikes are deeply troubling. The NAF takes these concerns seriously and remains fully committed to uncovering the truth. While these claims are distressing, it is important to emphasise that they remain allegations until a comprehensive investigation is concluded,” he said.
“In response to these allegations therefore, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has promptly ordered a thorough investigation to verify the claims and ensure appropriate action is taken based on the findings,” Akinboyewa stated in a Monday press release.
He emphasized that the NAF adheres to strict operational guidelines and international protocols. “As a professional force dedicated to the protection of Nigeria and its people, the NAF operates under strict rules of engagement and adheres to internationally accepted standards in all its operations. The NAF Ethos guarantees that our operations are always geared towards ensuring the well-being of our nation and citizens,” he added.
While urging the public to remain patient, Akinboyewa reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of innocent lives.
Regarding the air operation, he explained that it was launched following intelligence reports about an impending attack on security personnel by armed groups.
“The operation was launched in response to intelligence indicating a terrorist attack on a PMF location in the community, where bandits had already killed two PMF personnel and four vigilantes.”
Prior to the strike, these criminals had ambushed and killed two officers from the Police Mobile Force and four members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps.
He stated, “The airstrike resulted in the neutralization of several bandits and helped to repel the onslaught against Police Mobile Force and Katsina State Community Watch Corps personnel.”
The investigation into the alleged civilian casualties is ongoing, with the Air Force vowing to uphold transparency in its findings.
