‘I paid N450k fine’ — lady jailed 7 years for collecting N50k from man, not showing up speaks out

The Nigerian lady who went viral after a courtroom video
showed her being sued by a man who accused her of breaching a promise after he
sent her transport fare has broken her silence.

The clip showed the lady, identified as Jennifer, being
given a seven-year prison sentence, with an option to pay a N450,000 fine, for
accepting transport money from the man named Emmanuel and not following through
on a visit.

In a now-viral video, Jennifer disclosed that the dispute
began when she met Emmanuel online.

She said, despite their friendship, they had never met in
person. According to Jennifer, Emmanuel wanted her to travel from her home in
Asaba to see him in Abuja, but she insisted that since they had never met, he
should be the one to see her.

The lady said Emmanuel, however, refused, arguing that he
can not “visit a woman”. She added that he suddenly transferred N50,000 to her
account with a message that it was for her transportation and that he expected
to see her the next day. Jennifer said she was unimpressed by the gesture.

“I will just make this very short because this whole thing
is circulating on the internet… So I will just cut the whole sob story and make
it very short. Emmanuel sent me money for transportation so that he could see
me, but he is a friend I met online, so I do not really know him, and I have
never met him in person,” she said.

“So before Emmanuel sent that money to me, I told him to
come over to my city first, but he said no, that he could not go to visit a
woman. Later, he told me he wanted me to come over, but I also told him that I
could not come visit a man I did not really know and had never met before. Out
of the blue, this guy just sent me N50,000 with a text message that this was my
transportation and he wanted to see me the next day.”

She said she did not acknowledge the payment or his
subsequent messages demanding to know why she hadn’t arrived. She said that
soon after, she began receiving threatening calls from Emmanuel’s friends.

She said she was alarmed by the calls and attempted to
defuse the situation by offering a refund.

Jennifer said after a second attempt to return the money
failed because Emmanuel still refused to provide his details, she suggested he
use the funds to travel to her instead. According to her, by then, the matter
had already been taken to court.

The legal proceedings resulted in her now-viral sentence:
seven years in jail or a fine of N450,000. Jennifer confirmed that the case has
been resolved.

“Like you are doing alpha male for me with N50,000? What
should I use N50,000 for? So I just ignored him and did not reply to that
message. The following day, he sent me another message asking why I was not
there yet, but I also ignored,” she said.

“Before I knew it, I started getting calls and threats from
people, his friends. I do not know who he gave my number but they kept
threatening me that their friend sent me money. When I started getting calls
from all these people, I then reached out to him that I am no longer
comfortable with what is going on and that he should send his account number
let me forward the money to him.

“He said no, just glared up and started sending some kind of
messages. He was so angry, and he said a lot of things that I would not like to
say here. After two days, I reached out again and I told him that now that you
have sent this money, you know it would not be enough, and you do not want to
send your account number so I can refund, come to my city instead.”

“I do not want to say much about this issue because the
whole case has been sorted out. I gave him the N450,000. Obviously, it is
nothing to me, that is why I was surprised when he sent N50,000 for transport.”
