I Can Afford To Be A Failed Musician – Adekunle Gold

Nigerian singer, Adekunle Gold, has disclosed that his family is the most important aspect of his life.

Speaking during an appearance on a recent episode of the NotJustOk podcast, he explained that he wants to give his daughter a better life than he was given.

The ‘Orente’ hitmaker emphasised that he can afford to be a failed musician, but not a failed father and husband.

He stressed that his wife, Simi, and daughter, Adejare, are the centre of his life.

He shared that his song ‘My Love Is The Same’ was inspired by his determination to be a better father to his daughter.

All I wanted to be is to do more for my own daughter because I can’t afford to bring her to the kind of life that I grow up living. It has to be way better. And that’s why I’m working hard.

“My family is my centre. I don’t joke with my family. I can afford to be a failed musician, not a failed father or a man. That’s not negotiable for me,” he expressed.

Meanwhile, Adekunle Gold has shared how a painful personal loss inspired one of the songs on his upcoming Fuji album, which is set for release on October 3.

Naija News reports that the 38-year-old explained on Instagram that the project captures different parts of his journey, including lessons, victories, grief and the experience of fatherhood.

Among the tracks, he revealed that the oldest one, Simile, was written after the death of his father in 2019.

He recalled that during that period, he struggled with the weight of grief even as his manager pushed him to return to the studio.

Despite receiving an invitation to write for Beyoncé’s Lion King project, he said he could not feel any joy because of the loss he had just suffered.

According to him, the breakthrough came when he decided to pick up his microphone in his small home studio and pour out his emotions into music.

That process gave birth to Simile, a track which in Yoruba means “rest on me” or “lean on me.”

He described it as a reflection of his grief, confusion and search for direction.

Although the song was once considered for Beyoncé’s project, it never made the cut and remained unreleased for years.

In 2024, the song resurfaced when his longtime collaborator Michael played it again during a studio session, reminding him of the deep emotions tied to its creation.

He said that was when he decided it belonged on his new album.

Fuji will be Adekunle Gold’s sixth studio album, following Tequila Ever After, which was released in 2023.
