I almost quit music after Mo’Hits ended – Don Jazzy

Nigerian music producer and executive, Don Jazzy, has opened up about how he nearly quit music and relocated abroad following the breakup of Mo’Hits Records in 2012.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the Mavin Records boss disclosed that the fallout with his former partner, D’banj, left him deeply discouraged. According to him, it was the encouragement from close friends that convinced him to stay in Nigeria and rebuild his career — a decision that led to the birth of Mavin Records.

“When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” he said.

The Dorobucci hitmaker noted that the experience made him stronger, adding that nothing has been able to shake his resolve since then.

Following the Mo’Hits split, Don Jazzy founded Mavin Records, which became home to several former Mo’Hits artists including Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince, as well as new stars such as Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, and Di’ja.

Today, Mavin’s roster boasts top Nigerian acts like Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, Johnny Drille, and DJ Big N.

In 2024, Universal Music Group acquired a majority stake in Mavin Global, further boosting the label’s international expansion and cementing its status as one of Africa’s leading music powerhouses.
